Southern Railway Celebrates 73rd Republic Day
Southern Railway celebrated 73rd Republic Day with fanfare today (26.01.2022) at the Railway Stadium, Perambur,Chennai. Shri B. G Mallya, General Manager (In Charge), Southern Railway unfurled the National Flag and took the salute at the RPF Parade in the presence of Shri Birendra Kumar, Principal Chief Security Commissioner, Principal Heads of Departments, other officers and staff of Southern Railway.
Addressing to the gathering, the General Manager (I/C) said that Last Year has been a year of twin challenges, with the second wave on COVID 19 on the one hand and Nature’s fury on the other hand. However, the hard work and toil of our Railway men and women ensured that the zone emerged safe and also scaled greater heights.
Southern Railway is gradually bouncing back from the effect of Covid pandemic in 2020-21. 93 percent of Southern Railway owned mail/ express trains have restarted and 121 out of 306 Passenger trains owned by SR are also restored and run as express specials. Despite Increase in services we have maintained punctuality at 95.6 percent. Twelve pairs of Mail/Express trains have been provided with LHB rake during the current year.
Southern Railway has taken a series of steps to boost freight loading. The originating Freight loading for the nine month period from April to December 2021 stood at 21.75 Million Tonnes yielding an originating freight revenue of Rs.1990 Crores. As a further impetus to our freight segment, contracts have been awarded in 5 locations for development of goodsheds under private investment.
Southern Railway has achieved improvement in mobility and connectivity through Infrastructure development through completion of important projects like Tambaram-Chengalpattu 3rd line and Gauge conversion work in Madurai to Theni. Further 183 kms of doubling works were completed on Southern Railway last year. To meet the Indian Railways goal of 100 percent electrification by 2023, Southern Railway completed electrification of 352 Track km of new lines, which includes important sections like Pollachi- Podanur, Madurai – Manamadurai etc. Further electrification of 112 Track km has been completed under doubling/quadrupling.
The General Manager (I/C) listed the safety and security measures in place in the Zone and also detailed the remarkable strides in energy conservation both in traction and non-traction category. He listed the various measures taken in non-conventional energy too. He complimented Shri K.M.Sunil Kumar, Sub Inspector, Railway Protection Force, Tirur, in Palghat Division for having bagged the prestigious Indian Police Medal for meritorious service on the occasion of the Republic Day 2022.
Shri B.G.Mallya complimented the role of HR and sports and said that it was a matter of great pride that Sports Star Ms.P.Anitha has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri Award earlier this year. He also complimented Ms.Revathi Veeramani for representing the nation at the Tokyo Olympics.
At the Republic Day Function at Perambur, Shri B.G.Mallya also honoured all the Covid Warriors, especially Doctors and Para Medical Staff and Frontline staff who have rendered excellent service to the Railway during the Covid Pandemic.
The 73rd Republic Day was also celebrated in other divisions and extra divisional offices all over Southern Railway with patriotic fervour. A large number of Officers, staff and their families enthusiastically participated in these events. At Chennai, Shri Ganesh Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division unfurled the National Flag at Divisional Office, NGO Annexe, Park Town, Chennai. At Southern Railway Construction Office, Egmore, Shri Prafulla Varma, Chief Administrative Officer, unfurled the National Flag. At the Railway Electrification Office, Shri Sameer Dighe, Chief Project Director, unfurled the National Flag and at the Joint Republic Day celebrations of the Perambur Workshops viz., Loco Works, Carriage Works and Electrical Works/Perambur Shri Arun Devraj, Chief Workshop Manager, Loco Works, unfurled the National Flag.
