Bharathanatyam Arengetram with a difference were held in Chennai!


Chennai has witnessed many Bharathanatyam recitals & Arengetram and it is very common scene being the cultural capital of our country. Chennai is home to various sabha promoting performing artists of this ancient dance form of India. The one performed by Neha was with a Theme “Sampratti” which means Legacy and with a long-term mission to elevate the dance form and Tamil Culture to various countries in the Middle East & across the globe. The performer and Guru, their family are NRIs settled in Dubai (UAE).

 About the performer - Neha Krishnan 

Neha Krishnan, a 15 years old - grade 11 NRI student from Dubai (UAE) performed her Arengetram on 24th July, 2022 (Sunday) in Rasika Ranjani Sabha (RR Sabha), Mylapore, Chennai. Born to NRI parents Lakshmi Priya (mother), Anantha Krishnan (father) living in Dubai for almost 25 years, Neha was curious about Tamil culture and Bharathanatyam when she was 5 years old. She started her journey under the tutelage of Lakshmi Venkatesh, a Bharathanatyam guru based in Dubai. Neha is trained in Ballet dance (western dance) from the London School of Dance and received grade 6 completion certificate from the Royal Academy of Dance, UK. She is also a recipient of Duke of Edinburgh Award.  

Neha’s Social responsibility: 

 Neha believes in social service and is very much committed as responsible citizen and wish to give back to society. She care for society and truly inspired by the idea of co-existence. Neha is active in  'best buddy' program. Under this program, a student becomes a 'peer buddy' to a child of determination, who can then meet and be friends with other pupils and their families. "Buddy pairs are created between mainstream school pupils and pupils from various special needs centers in the UAE. Neha love dogs and she goes to the Dubai Stray Dog Center every Saturday to take  7 to 8 dogs for a 1 kilometre walk.

 Neha's mission for Bharathanatyam and Cultural Exchanges across the Middle East / World:

Neha believes that Bharathanatyam is a great dance form, which she wish to perform in every province in the United Arab Emirates to show the richness of Tamil culture, tradition and values to people, not only limiting to UAE alone but also across other Middle Eastern countries and to the world. "Tamil culture, art forms, tradition, family bonding and values are unique and I want to show it to the world" - says Neha. She is confident of achieving her mission with the help of her Guru - Lakshmi Venkatesh (NRI), Dubai and Singer - Sahana Venkatesh (NRI - studying her masters in Scotland)

 Family Background:

Neha's mother Lakhsmi Priya is a Professor in a college run by the Dubai Government and father Anantha Krishnan working in private company in Dubai. One of the highlights of Neha's Arengetram was a Padam composed in Tamil by her mother which was a conversation between mother and daughter, that brought out the values of a family, bonding and strength. Since the lyrics of the song is in Tamil, it was easy for the audience to comprehend and understand. Neha's mother Lakshmi Priya added "They are sure and fortunate to taking this mission as UAE has more respect towards Indian expatriates who are playing a pivotal role in the development of the country. UAE encourages cultural compatibility in all spheres and recently started to provide Golden Visa to expatriates who are in the field of art & culture" 

Event Honours:

Keeping Guru bakthi and our Tamil traditional values, eminent Gurus were honoured. Vanamala - Former HOD of Culturals Department, Anna Adarsh Higher Secondary School & Director of Sai Vidyalaya, Chennai. Sherthalai R. Sivakumar - Professional Carnatic Violinist, A-Grade Artiste at All India Radio.
