Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet Achieves JCI Accreditation, Strengthening Chennai’s Position as Asia’s Healthcare Capital

Chennai:

Kauvery Hospital proudly announces that its Alwarpet unit has achieved the prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) 8th Edition Accreditation, following the Vadapalani unit’s accreditation in January 2025. With this dual recognition, Kauvery joins an exclusive group of hospitals in India with multiple JCI-accredited centers, reaffirming its role as a trusted destination for world-class healthcare.

The JCI 8th Edition standards represent the most rigorous and updated benchmarks in global healthcare. Covering more than one thousand measurable elements, these standards emphasize:

Patient Safety First: Robust infection control practices, stringent medication management, and strict adherence to surgical safety protocols.

Clinical Excellence: Continuous monitoring of treatment outcomes, use of evidence-based medicine, and integration of multidisciplinary expertise in patient care.

Transparency & Rights: Clear communication with patients and families, respect for patient rights, and shared decision-making in treatment.

Emergency Preparedness: Advanced systems to handle critical care situations, ensuring patients receive timely, life-saving interventions.

Continuous Improvement: Regular staff training, clinical audits, and technology adoption to constantly enhance care quality.

Green Hospital: For Kauvery Hospital, this means that care goes beyond treating illness — it includes protecting the environment in which patients live and ensuring healthcare remains safe, reliable, and sustainable for future generations. By aligning with these global standards, Kauvery demonstrates its responsibility not only to today’s patients but also to the health of tomorrow’s communities. Global Health Impact is not just a standard — it is a promise: to provide world-class care that is safer for patients, smarter for communities, and kinder to the planet

Speaking on this achievement, Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder & Executive Director of Kauvery Hospital, said:

“This achievement is more than an institutional milestone — it is a moment of pride for Chennai. Dual JCI accreditation at Kauvery Alwarpet and Vadapalani reflects our city’s growing stature as a global healthcare hub.

JCI accreditation ensures globally benchmarked systems for patient safety, infection control, clinical governance, and continuous improvement. Every step of care — from admission to discharge — follows evidence-based protocols that lead to fewer medical errors, faster recovery, and higher patient satisfaction.

At the same time, efficiency, reduced wastage, and better coordination help lower the overall cost of care. By doing things right the first time, we make healthcare both high in quality and affordable. This accreditation reassures our patients that they are receiving care aligned with the world’s best standards.”

For the community, this accreditation translates into safer surgeries, lower infection risks, accurate diagnostics, and improved treatment outcomes. It also assures international patients that Chennai, long recognized as the healthcare capital of Asia, continues to uphold and exceed global standards of care.

With two JCI-accredited units, Kauvery Hospital sets a benchmark in clinical excellence and patient safety, reinforcing Chennai’s reputation as a trusted healthcare destination for both local and global communities.

With advanced technology, specialized expertise across disciplines, and a compassionate care model, Kauvery Hospital is redefining excellence in Chennai’s healthcare ecosystem. This dual accreditation is a powerful affirmation of the city’s reputation as a preferred destination for medical travelers and a trusted choice for local communities.

Apollo Cancer Centres Raises Awareness on Hereditary Cancer!

Chennai:

Apollo Cancer Centres (ACC), one of India’s foremost cancer care networks, is leading the charge during Hereditary Cancer Awareness Week to highlight the critical importance of recognizing hereditary cancers. The focus is on to emphasize early detection through genetic testing and proactive screening, aiming to educate families, empower high-risk individuals, and underscore how timely intervention can save lives.

Hereditary cancers arise from inherited gene mutations passed from parents to children, which increase, but do not confirm, the risk of developing cancer. These mutations disrupt genes responsible for cell growth, repair, and tumour suppression. Globally, hereditary cancers account for 5–10% of all cancers (PMC.NCBI), while most are caused by lifestyle, environmental factors, or random mutations. Common hereditary cancer syndromes include Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC), Lynch syndrome, and Familial Adenomatous Polyposis.

In India, breast cancer accounted for 1,78,361 cases and ovarian cancer for 45,701 cases in 2020 (Globocan Report). Over 10% of these are linked to BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations, with prevalence across Indian studies ranging from 2.9% to 28% (IJMIO). Other gene mutations linked to HBOC remain underreported. Lynch syndrome, which causes 2–3% of colorectal cancers (ScienceDirect), is also associated with elevated risks of cancers in the endometrium, stomach, pancreas, ovary, urinary tract, and more. Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) is a rare inherited condition causing numerous colon polyps and a near-certain risk of colorectal cancer by age 40, with limited data available in India (NCBI).

Against this backdrop, ACC Chennai recently treated a remarkable case of familial clustering where four members of a single family from Guwahati, spanning two generations, were diagnosed with cancers linked to Lynch syndrome. The mother, Mrs. Namita Dey, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 50 years and treated in 2011, while her daughter, Mrs. Deepa Ghosh, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 26 years and treated in 2012. More recently, her other two children, Mrs. Shikha Sarkar and Mr. Mathura Nath Dey, both diagnosed at 40 years, were treated in 2024 for right colon cancer. All four are currently doing well, underscoring how timely intervention and surgical care can change treatment outcomes to lead a better-quality life.

Speaking about the significance of this case, Dr. Venkat P, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai, said, “These cases clearly demonstrate that cancer is not always sporadic—it can often be inherited and run through families across generations. When multiple family members are affected, it is a strong signal that genetic factors may be at play. In such high-risk families, genetic counselling and proactive screening become invaluable tools. They not only help us identify individuals who may be predisposed but also enable us to take preventive or early treatment measures, offering patients the best chance of cure, survival, and improved quality of life.”

Adding perspective, Dr. Priya Kapoor, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai, noted, “Families with multiple cases of colorectal, ovarian, or endometrial cancers must take their medical history seriously and not dismiss these patterns as coincidence. Such clustering is often the first indication of an inherited cancer syndrome. Genetic testing becomes the essential first step in identifying those at risk, followed by structured surveillance plans. Regular colonoscopies, timely removal of polyps, and in some cases even preventive surgeries, allow us to intervene before cancers fully develop—helping save lives and reducing the emotional and physical toll on families.”

The Patient said, “When cancer struck not just one but four of us in our family, it felt overwhelming and frightening. But our Doctors at Apollo Cancer Centres, helped us, not just with treatment, but guidance and compassion at every step. Today, we are all doing well, and we carry hope instead of fear. It has shown me that even when cancer runs in families, timely care can truly change the story.”

Reinforcing ACC’s commitment, Mr. Harshad Reddy, Director, Group Oncology & International, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd, said, “At Apollo Cancer Centres, our commitment goes far beyond offering advanced treatment—we see it as our responsibility to lead awareness and education on cancers that can be inherited. Too often, families don’t realize that cancer can run in their genes until multiple members are affected. Awareness, when combined with timely action, is the strongest weapon to win over cancer.”

The event highlighted ACC’s expertise in hereditary cancers, featuring insights from the treating oncologists and showcasing real-life patient cases. Through these efforts, ACC continues to reinforce its leadership in hereditary cancer education, raising awareness about genetic risk, early detection, and proactive care, and demonstrating its commitment to improving patient outcomes across India.

95-Year-Old Man Undergoes Successful Protected Angioplasty at PROMED Hospital, Chennai

Chennai:

PROMED Hospital, Chennai, a leading centre for advanced cardiac and critical care has achieved a landmark medical feat by successfully performing a protected angioplasty on a 95-year-old man, one of the oldest patients in Asia to undergo such a complex cardiac intervention.

The breakthrough redefines the possibilities of heart treatment in the elderly and underscores Promed’s leadership in geriatric cardiac care.  The patient, Mr. S, was admitted to Promed Hospital after suffering a major heart attack (NSTEMI) that severely weakened his heart function. Despite his advanced age and multiple pre-existing conditions — including hypertension, anemia, and a prior stroke in 2023 — the cardiac team, led by Dr. Arun Kalyanasundaram, Director & Head of Cardiology, undertook a highly complex yet precisely planned multi-vessel percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).  To ensure maximum safety during this high-risk procedure, doctors utilized the Impella CP, a miniature heart pump that temporarily supports cardiac function. Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) imaging provided real-time, high-definition visuals to guide the precise stent placement.  Drug-Eluting Stents (DES) were successfully deployed in the Right Coronary Artery (RCA) and Left Main Artery (LMA), while Drug-Eluting Balloons (DEB) were used to clear blockages in the Posterior Left Branch (PLB) and Diagonal artery, a combination rarely attempted in patients of this age group.  The procedure was completed successfully without complications. Mr. S made an excellent recovery and has since been discharged in a stable condition. He has resumed light physical activity and daily interactions, marking a remarkable comeback for a patient of his age.  This case highlights that advanced cardiac procedures can be performed safely and effectively in nonagenarian patients when guided by expertise, technology, and individualized care.

Dr. Arun Kalyanasundaram, Director & Head of Cardiology, Promed Hospital, said:

“Performing angioplasty in a 95-year-old patient with multiple health challenges required not just technical skill but strategic restraint. Every step from risk evaluation to stent deployment was meticulously planned to ensure safety and long-term success. What makes this case remarkable is the precision and teamwork that enabled complete revascularization in such an elderly patient.”

Dr. Spoorthi Arun, Founder & Managing Director, Promed Hospital, added “We are dedicated to ensuring that advanced cardiac interventions are accessible to all, regardless of age. This successful protected angioplasty using the Impella heart pump exemplifies how technology, teamwork, and compassion come together at Promed to deliver safe outcomes, even in extremely high-risk situations.”

Mr. S, the 95-year-old patient, shared, “After the heart attack, I was told my heart was very weak and had several blockages. When the doctors said it could be treated, I had both fear and faith. Today, I feel stronger and grateful, I can enjoy conversations, short walks, and time with my family again. They didn’t just treat my heart; they gave me back my life.”  This protected angioplasty on Asia’s oldest patient marks a significant milestone in the evolution of geriatric cardiac care.

It showcases India’s growing expertise in managing high-risk cardiac procedures with global standards of precision and safety.  Promed Hospital continues to be at the forefront of technology-driven, patient-centred innovation, combining empathy with clinical excellence to redefine possibilities in cardiac and critical care.

Kauvery Hospital Performs World’s First Breakthrough Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement on a High-Risk Elderly woman aged 83

Chennai:

In a historic achievement, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, has successfully performed the world’s first transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) with an extended external wrap and atrialized implant through femoral vein (groin) access on an 83-year-old patient who had been considered “inoperable” by multiple cardiac surgeons.

The patient had multiple comorbidities and had recurrent hospital admissions due to heart failure caused by severe Mitral Valve dysfunction caused by severe Mitral Annular Calcification (MAC). As she had  undergone radiotherapy to the chest twice in the past – first for cancer of the esophagus, and later following breast cancer surgery, any form of open-heart surgery or even minimally invasive surgical approaches was deemed too dangerous. Several cardiothoracic surgeons in India across major centers had declined surgery, leaving the patient without options.

Severe Mitral Annular Calcification (MAC) – is a condition where heavy calcium deposits build up around the mitral valve of the heart. The mitral valve works like a door that opens and closes to regulate blood flow from left upper chamber (atrium) to lower chamber (ventricle). In MAC, this “doorframe” becomes rock-hard, jammed with calcium, making the valve unable to function properly. Patients develop severe breathlessness, fatigue, and heart failure. Surgery is usually very risky because stitching a new valve into this calcified ring can cause cracks, bleeding, or failure of the new valve. Standard catheter-based methods are also unsafe because the valve cannot be securely anchored.

“To overcome these challenges, we developed a first-of-its-kind trans-catheter technique. A replacement valve was modified with an external wrap to ensure secure fixation and prevent leaks. It was then implanted in a slightly higher-than-usual position (atrialized implant) for proper anchoring, preventing leak around valve and preventing obstruction to left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT). Previously reported procedures were completed through ope heart surgery, with direct implantation through left atrium. Most importantly in this case, the entire procedure was completed through the right femoral vein in the groin, avoiding the need to open the chest. Patient recovered well from the procedure and was discharged home after a week. This is the world’s first case of its kind and it gives new hope to similar high-risk patients globally,” said Dr Rajaram Anantharaman, Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Kauvery hospital Alwarpet, Chennai
