Eight Fishermen Saved at Sea by Indian Coast Guard off Karaikal

Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Ameya patrolling off Karaikal received a distress message on radio from a fishing boat stranded approximately 15 nautical miles from coast due to machinery breakdown. Sensing the urgency of distress onboard fishing boat, which was drifting away from the shore due to weather, the ICG ship towed the boat to safety and handed over to the Fisheries authority off Nagapattinam.

During this rescue mission, the officials of Indian Coast Guard Station Karaikal were in constant communication with the boat owner and fisheries authorities. The incident once again highlights the disadvantages of fishing boats venturing out alone. The fishermen are therefore, advised to undertake fishing in groups adhering to safe practices at sea and carry adequate lifesaving appliances and communication equipment onboard.
