Southern Railway celebrates 75th anniversary of Indian Independence Day
The Nation is commemorating the monumental occasion of the 75th Anniversary of Indian Independence as ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements.
The 76th Independence Day Celebrations held today is part of year-long celebrations under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Southern Railway celebrated the 76th Independence Day today (15.08.2022) at the Railway Stadium, Perambur, Chennai. Shri B.G.Mallya, General Manager, Southern Railway hoisted the National Flag in the presence of Shri G.M.Eswara Rao, Principal Chief Security Commissioner, RPF, and took the salute at the RPF parade comprising of RPF contingents including Women Platoons and St John's Ambulance Brigade. The program was attended by Principal Heads of Departments of Southern Railway, Shri Ganesh, Divisional Railway Manager Chennai, Smt Renuka Mallya, President of Southern Railway Women's Headquarters Organisation, Officers & Staff and their family members, and Representatives of Labour Unions and Associations of Southern Railway. Addressing the gathering, the General Manager recalled the great sacrifices of martyrs of freedom and their invaluable struggle to free India. He stated that it is the responsibility of the present generation to nurture patriotic spirit in young minds.
He appreciated the railway employees for carrying the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign far and wide by hoisting National flag at their homes, offices and railway stations. He lauded the efforts of Officers and Staff for enthusiastically organizing various activities in commemoration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. In his address, the General Manager briefly outlined the various performance highlights of the zone, especially about the various infrastructure, electrification, engineering and safety works. He mentioned that projects such as Andipatti – Teni section (of Madurai-Bodinayakkanur Gauge conversion) and new line between Milavittan-Melmarudur have been completed during 2021-22.
Further, 69.97 Kms of doubling has been completed in the current fiscal. He added that in Southern Railway, under Station redevelopment, nine stations viz. Chennai Egmore, Rameswaram, Madurai, Katpadi, Kanniyakumari, Puduchery, Ernakulam Jn., Kollam and Ernakulam Town have been taken up. Emphasising on Level Crossing Safety, GM mentioned that 69 Bridges were rehabilitated/replaced, 54 nos. of ROB/RUB/LHS’s were completed, 35 nos. of Manned LC’s were eliminated by the Railway. The zone is marching ahead in all facets of working by adopting modern technological advancements like Electronic Interlocking, he added.
During the programme, sixteen retired railway employees of Southern Railway were honoured by the General Manager for their outstanding service to the organization and society at large as part of the Program commemorating 75 Years of Indian Independence. All these retired Railway personnel had crossed the age of 75 years and were felicitated by the General Manager. Cultural programmes by RPF, Dog Squad ( Dog Show) and performances by various departments including the Railway schools and Ashraya, the Special school for special children, followed the Flag Hoisting program. General Manager also flagged off a mega bike rally by the Bharat Scouts & Guides of Southern Railway as part of the 76th Independence Day program.
